It’s happened to you before and it’s going to happen again. Some guy is going to get all up in your personal space, dance way too close and you’re going to be left wondering what the heck to do about it!

We’re here to reassure you that it’s okay to take action and do something about it.

Creating distance between you and your Salsa partner

First things first – as soon as you feel the lead getting too close, it’s time to take a stand. Place your hand on his chest and push yourself backwards firmly. Do it calmly and confidently and most sensible leads will get the hint. On the off chance that he tries to pull a quick one and get all cozy again, repeat your hand on the chest “back off” sequence. After you’ve created your space again, it’s probably best to give the lead a verbal cue as he seems to be clueless to your body language. Respectfully tell him that you appreciate your space and continue dancing.

Don’t feel bad about standing up for yourself

Ladies, it’s understandable that standing up for yourself like this could make you feel uncomfortable or maybe even “rude” to a certain degree. We’re here to assure you that it’s completely okay and isn’t off side when it comes to Salsa dancing etiquette. After all, it’s important that you enjoy yourself too right? No matter who you’re dancing with, you should always feel comfortable with your dance partner. If that’s not the case, then something needs to be done.

What if he doesn’t like how you’re acting?

If for some reason, the lead is upset by your actions, let him go. It wasn’t meant to be. Some people need to take a chill pill and it’s better that they learn when they have crossed a line. Hopefully, over time, they’ll begin to understand that everyone has different limits and preferences. What is comfortable for one woman may not be the case for another.
